Welcome to the Bosnian Minerals web page!
We hope you will find it, at the very least, helpful and
informative. On this web page, you will find various mineral
specimens from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Despite the fact that
there are not many specimens in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and
though the region is not particularly rich in minerals, this
does not detract from their importance and beauty; in fact, it
makes them unique.
On this web page, you will find a virtual
“Hyalophane Gallery” that will significantly enrich
your knowledge of this specific mineral. In the section
entitled “Other Bosnian Specimens” you will find
information about other Bosnian minerals. Moreover, as soon as
we have any of them for sale, we will add them to the gallery.
For your convenience, we will include only
the best photos of the minerals in the gallery. Furthermore,
for the purposes of presenting the most realistic view of the
mineral samples, we emphasize that these photos will not be
retouched. Nevertheless, the photos will be in high resolution.
If you wish to use any of the photos either
for personal or commercial use you are more than welcome to do
that. However, the conditions of use include crediting either
the author (for instance, “Photo: Rainer Walter
Schmied”).
Moreover, we would very much appreciate it
if you would send us an example of the printed materials (in
the event of print use) or the link to the page (in the event
of web use).

About Hyalophane
Mine: Zagradski Potok
Hyalophane from the Zagradski Potok mine is
the most representative mineral from Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Its color is translucent-white and, occasionally,
slightly yellowish due to iron stains. The Hyalophane from
Bosnia-Herzegovina is a very rare specimen and can be found
only in the Zagradski Potok mine. As you can see in our
Hyalophane Gallery, this specimen appears in translucent
crystals and, in very rare instances, as a matrix.
Additionally, it is practically impossible to find it in larger
sizes.
For a very long period of time, it was
nearly impossible to find any examples of this beautiful
specimen. The mine is very small and a better name for it would
be a cove.
One of the main reasons for cessation of
any and all mining activities in Zagradski Potok is directly
attributable to the unfortunately long period of war in
Bosnia-Herzegovina.
As the region is now relatively peaceful,
the local people have once again entered into the mining
business. Thanks to them, we can now enjoy and admire this
beautiful and rare mineral. Yet, as is true of all beautiful
objects, the mineral is very difficult to find.
The last samples were extracted at the end
of 2004.
